What does Breathwork actually mean?

Writer: Heike BitterleHeike Bitterle

The term Breathwork has been used frequently for some time now. But what is actually behind it? What can I expect when I sign up for a Breathwork workshop or ceremony? Why is it so "in" right now?

I had my first Breathwork experience in lockdown at the beginning of 2020. Online, on the recommendation of a friend from Berlin who wrote something like "wow, never experienced anything so amazing". I became curious, dived in and, after my first offline experience at the latest, I realized that our breath brings with it a power I had never known before and can help me find my way back to myself and inner peace.

DEFINITION

If you ask Chat GPT about the meaning, you get the following answer:

"Breathwork is a practice in which conscious breathing is used as a tool to promote physical, emotional and spiritual healing and growth. It is a form of breathwork that focuses on consciously controlling the breath to experience different states of awareness and to oxygenate and energize the body."

That's how I would describe it myself. Breathwork initially only describes the fact that we consciously influence our breathing pattern, i.e. we don't let the breath flow carelessly. This means that holding your breath against hiccups or alternate breathing at the beginning of a yoga class could also be described as breathwork. So when you read or hear about breathwork, I invite you to simply ask what kind of breathing technique it is.

DIVERSITY

Because there are many breathing techniques. Some that tend to energize and invigorate us, others that tend to calm and relax us. There are now also numerous trained breathing coaches who can support you with exactly the techniques and methods that suit your situation.

TRADITION AND MODERN TIMES

In ancient cultures, the breath has long been known as a powerful tool. In yogi:nis as well as in shamanic circles, it is constantly used to support well-being on all levels. Western science has only discovered in recent years what is hidden behind our breath, which we so often take for granted. The army uses breathing techniques, and more and more companies are discovering that certain breathing techniques can be used to increase employee productivity.

BREATHWORK CEREMONY

Breathwork, as I practise and teach it, is an activating breathing technique combined with breathing pauses. The gethighonyouownsupply method allows you to feel your inner self, connect your mind and body, release blockages on these levels, bring emotions into flow and thereby strengthen your life energy. By consciously breathing according to this method, you bring your attention into the here and now and make space for all the sensations that are currently present. Ultimately, it is a journey inwards, guided by your breathing, this powerful tool that accompanies us throughout our lives.

During and after a so-called breathing journey, many profound processes can be set in motion. Ultimately, a ceremony supports you in finding yourself again, uncovering answers, letting go of what no longer serves you and coming into your power. Old emotions that may have been swept under the table for years are revealed and can be perceived, felt and integrated. And perhaps after one or more sessions you will feel inner peace, contentment, perfection, gratitude and joy spreading.

I like to create these experiences in a ceremonial setting in order to offer a protected space in which everything is allowed to be, all emotions and sensations are allowed to be there and do not have to be hidden or suppressed. I am always with you before, during and after the breathing journey. I accompany you as a guide in your process, no matter where you are. We take enough time for integration, because in my opinion this is the most important part of transformative processes.

Would you like to embark on a journey inwards? To release blockages, to free yourself from everything that no longer serves you, to experience the power of the breath and to feel yourself?

Here you will find information about the forms and occasions in which I offer Breathwork ceremonies in and around Munich and online - both in German and in English. And in the calendar you will find the next dates.

You are also welcome to write me an email if you would like to organize Breathwork for yourself, friends, acquaintances, colleagues, events and much more.

P.S.: You don't need any experience for the Breathwork ceremonies. The only thing you should be aware of is that it is not suitable for people with pregnancy, epilepsy, untreated high blood pressure, increased eye pressure, detached retina, stroke, psychosis or recent operations.
